Latin America Initiative
Chris Hermansen, Juan-Pablo Cerda

Timberline, Vancouver

Timberline is committed to developing new markets for products and services. This includes the expansion of horizontal and vertical markets within the existing geographic range, as well as opportunities to market Timberline's products and services in new geographic regions.

Latin America, and Chile in particular, is the current focus of Timberline's market expansion. Numerous Latin American countries are experiencing a renewed strength in their economies now that they are politically and socially stabilized. Innovation in policies and motivation of local residents are helping to overcome long pending economic/social challenges. The forestry sector of countries such as Mexico and Chile are experiencing rapid expansion and updating, as described in the May 2003 edition of the Timber Lines Newsletter (www.timberline.ca/newsletter/2003May/index_may.html).

Along with other CNRG members (www.cnrg.org), Timberline currently is exploring several initiatives in Latin America, especially in Chile. Some of these initiatives derive from a sustainable forest management model designed and implemented in Ontario by the Pikangikum First Nation, Taiga Institute for Land Management, and Timberline (www.whitefeatherforest.com). Taking advantage of recently implemented national systems of forest concessions throughout Latin America, Timberline already applied for a license to manage one such concession in Southern Chile. Timberline is also working together with Pikangikum and Chilean Mapuche communities to transfer Canadian expertise on managing public land. Timberline hopes to replicate this model of management, if proved feasible, with local partners throughout Latin America.

Timberline already relies on several strategic alliances with Latin American governmental agencies and major private instances. Through these alliances services are beginning to be offered in some Latin American markets. These services include software applications, remote sensing and inventory, mapping, and natural resources planning. Timberline expects to become fully established in Chile in 2004.

Timberline Supporting Tree Canada Through Recycling Project
David Carson
Timberline, Victoriaseedling

In five offices across Alberta and British Columbia, Timberline will be gathering and recycling ink and toner cartridges. This effort will divert waste from landfills, support the Tree Canada Foundation (www.treecanada.ca), and fund tree planting in community enhancement projects. Tree Canada Foundation

Tree Canada Foundation is a not-for-profit, charitable organization, which was established in 1992. The foundation provides education, technical assistance, resources, and financial support to encourage Canadians to plant and care for trees.

Greentec InternationalTree Canada is encouraging Timberline to assist in supporting their fundraising initiative, through the Thinkgreen Cartridge Collection Program of Greentec International (www.greentec.com, www.thinkgreen.com). The collection of our used ink jet and laser toner cartridges will assist Tree Canada in generating funding as well as planting trees. Nearly two million trees are planted through the Thinkgreen Funding Program each year.

ThinkgreenFor every cartridge collected by Timberline, Greentec International will donate up to $5.00 to Tree Canada. Also, Timberline accumulates credits towards trees that we can use to support local programs - one tree for every 12 cartridges returned.

Stay posted for details as this program gets underway at Timberline.

Change in Executive @ Timberline

Timberline Forest Inventory Consultants Ltd. undergoes changes to its Executive effective July 1, 2003, consistent with the long-term succession plan.

Mark Godfrey steps down as President replaced by Doug Walker, who has been with Timberline since 1993, most recently as Chief Operating Officer. Mark Godfrey remains as Chair of the Board.

Along with Mark Godfrey, Dave Jamieson and Harold Hunt step down from the Executive Committee. The new Executive Committee consists of Erik Wang, Doug Walker, Geoff Clarke and John Fuller.

Mark Godfrey is not concerned with these latest changes. Mark Godfrey asserts, "A solid management team is in place and has been working for five years. The replacement of individual personnel is not an issue with a strong team."

Mark Godfrey and Dave Jamieson founded Timberline in 1971, with Chris Hermansen and John Fuller becoming owners several years later. The current changes to the Executive continue a strategy to transfer ownership and management to Timberline employees.

Approximately 25% of Timberline employees own 100% of the company. "This gives us great unity of focus across all offices and markets." states Doug Walker. "We are committed to remaining a successful employee-owned firm, with ownership extending to even more employees over the next few years."

Timberline's commitment to maintaining its client focus is evident even through these changes. Vancouver is still Timberline's Head Office, but Doug Walker will remain in Edmonton, allowing Doug to continue supporting local clients. Mark Godfrey and Dave Jamieson will remain as part-time Senior Consultants, based in the Vancouver office. Harold Hunt will continue full-time with INFORM Network for Management Systems Ltd., a joint-venture company with Telus.

There will be several challenges ahead for Doug Walker and Timberline. Canada's forest sector including contractors and consultants is facing difficult times. Doug Walker states, "Our challenge is to ride out the current weak markets, maintaining our technical competencies and strengthening our business basics. Timberline's primary focus continues to be providing quality service to our clients, with greater emphasis than ever before on cost-effectiveness, responsiveness, and value."
